Moodle Opens Options for Learning

Technology is everywhere. Whether it is Facebook, Skype, Twitter, or a blog like this one, we are now able to communicate in so many ways. And now Moodle is making the transfer of information at South College even easier.

We love to employ the best technology available. That’s why we have state-of-the-art classrooms and wireless Internet throughout our campus. That is also why we are so excited to incorporate Moodle into our curriculum.

Moodle is, in effect, a virtual learning environment. Through this software system, students can access coursework for each of their classes from any computer with Internet access. All students need is a South College e-mail address and their password to read the class syllabus; check on assignments and course information; look up their professor’s notes; or ask the professors questions directly. Students can even do research directly through Moodle.

The process began last March. Our entire faculty is now receiving extensive training on the best, most effective uses of the Moodle system. They are truly enthusiastic about the possibilities. And the students who have used it love it as well. In addition to being a versatile learning tool, Moodle offers students experience with the type of technology they will be using in the workplace. It’s exciting and it is convenient, perfect for our working students and anyone juggling intense schedules.

Of course, Moodle does not replace going to class. It won’t take notes, and it surely will not provide the hands-on and clinical experience available in our classrooms. It will in no way lessen the one-on-one attention our faculty gives our students.

Instead, Moodle allows us to supplement our face-to-face classroom experience. Our faculty can teach a fifty-minute class, and then extend that learning with additional information students can access anytime, anywhere. This fall, 100 percent of our classes will be using Moodle.

As technology makes information sharing easier for everyone, we at South College are making it easy for everyone to Moodle.
