A season of angels

November 24th, 2009 by Stephen A. South

As we reflect on our blessings in this season of giving thanks, many children and families right here in East Tennessee are not so fortunate. No child ever chooses to live in poverty, and no parent wants to be unable to provide a gift or toy for their child at Christmas time.

That’s why it warms my heart when groups like our Student Affairs Advisory Committee ask everyone to be “Someone’s Angel.” This year the SAAC partnered with Child and Family Tennessee, a nonprofit agency that gives a helping hand to vulnerable children and families in East Tennessee.

Angel trees are set up on both South College campuses, and I am so encouraged by the generous response of our students and visitors to the requests. These gifts bring a little hope to children that may otherwise see no joy at Christmas – a time when every other “good little boy or girl” they know looks forward to a visit from Santa Claus.

If everyone could be an angel to one needy child this Christmas, especially this year with so many people facing financial difficulty, it would be a shining example of the traditional Tennessee volunteer spirit.

So following the example of our SAAC, I invite everyone to be an angel this Christmas. Count your blessings and be a blessing. Give from your heart and help someone in need in our community. It will make your holidays even more special.
