We are thrilled to welcome students to our new South College School of Pharmacy. In January of 2010, we submitted an application for pre-candidate status to the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). This past Monday, we received notice that we have been granted approval to launch our doctor of pharmacy degree program.

This is great news, not only for South College but also for the community. This new program offers a unique educational opportunity in this area and will bring faculty and students from all over the country to Knoxville. (more…)

Say “YES” to opportunity

Friday, December 23rd, 2011 by Stephen A. South

PA professional and radio talk show host Lisa D’Andrea-Lenell encourages graduates to use the skills and knowledge learned at South College to take up the torch as the next generation of physician assistants and say “Yes!” to every opportunity during the recent graduation ceremonies at the Tennessee Theatre.

At South College’s Class of 2011 Physician Assistant Studies graduation ceremony on Saturday, I had the privilege to shake the hands of 50 students as they walked across the stage, received their Masters in Health Science degree and began a new life as a medical professional. In addition, a white coat ceremony was held for the 58 students in the Class of 2012 who are moving on to the clinical portion of their study of medicine. (more…)

South College has a great service record — military service that is.

Within our Physician Assistant program alone, five faculty members are veterans of Vietnam, Korea and Afghanistan. Many of our graduate physician assistants are veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and we have a host of students who have served or are current reservists. (more…)

Higher education more important than ever

Funding a college education can be a daunting task, considering rising tuition and expenses.

The long-term value of that education, however, is what makes the cost worthwhile. (more…)

Erin Donovan dares to be a guest lecturer

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011 by Stephen A. South

Norman Hammitt (left) welcomes Erin Donovan (right) as guest lecturer in his public relations class.

Guest lecturers are a great learning tool. The first-hand experiences they bring to the classroom give students another perspective on the value of what they are learning.

Local television personality Erin Donovan treated Norman Hammitt’s public relations class to a discussion about the important relationship between those in the public relations field and members of the media. (more…)

Another South College success - Jason Childs

Monday, March 7th, 2011 by Stephen A. South

In recent years South College has grown by leaps and bounds, but our focus continues to be the student. I love hearing from our alumni and getting their perspective of the learning experience at South College. Especially alumni like Jason Childs, who has grown right along with South College. (more…)

New Facility on Target for January Opening

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 by Stephen A. South

We’re almost there!

Tiered lecture halls are wired for laptop use.

I am so excited about our new West Knoxville facility and how it is shaping up, I thought I would give you a sneak preview.

The new Parkside Learning Center is highly visible, yet in one of the most peaceful, contemplative settings in West Knoxville. It is going to be a fantastic state-of-the-art learning environment for four of our great programs.

The new medical suites for our Physician Assistant Studies students are incredible. Built to replicate actual office settings, they will provide the latest training protocol available to help our students acquire the knowledge and skills they will need as health care professionals. The PA program will share the third floor with our school of nursing.

Pharmaceutical studies students will soon be able to earn their doctoral degree here at South College. The school of pharmacy will occupy the second floor of the new facility which includes fully equipped labs and dispensaries necessary for pharmacy training.

The first floor of the new facility will house the school of education. We have added even more classrooms to accommodate this growing field, complete with the latest technology that allows teachers to “write on the board” from their desktop computer. As the field of education continues to evolve, we want to help our students prepare to teach in this new generation of classrooms.

Numerous study rooms have been incorporated throughout the building to accommodate small group learning and discussions which are an important part of all our programs.

The Parkside Learning Center also features a student activities center, a canteen and a 120-seat theater. With all the latest audio visual technology, the theater will be a great venue for lectures, events and special guest speakers.

Of course, the whole facility is wired with up-to-the-minute technology so students and faculty will have all the information they need at their finger tips anywhere in the building. Though it is a tremendous project encompassing nearly 85,000 square feet, we are moving right along. I am looking forward with great enthusiasm toward January, when South College will open the doors on the newest, most exciting learning environment in Knoxville.

These halls will soon be filled with students.

A young man came into my office the other day. He said he wanted to thank me personally for his experience at South College and the success he has had securing employment after graduation. It was an ideal opportunity to see the school from a student’s perspective. (more…)

Last week we began demolition inside the former Goody’s corporate headquarters on Parkside Drive, to convert the office space into our new Parkside Centre Learning Site. We will occupy approximately 85,000 square feet in the property’s “west wing,” which includes a 200-seat auditorium. (more…)
